The Gulf Coast Challenge and The Mobile Sports Authority Presents an HBCU Prime Time Experience

Apr 12th, 2022

Mobile, AL – During the month where the Spring season ushers in the unofficial start of Summer, Football reigns supreme and is top of mind for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) being welcomed by the City and County of Mobile and the Gulf Coast this fall!

The 5th Annual Gulf Coast Challenge Powered by the Mobile Sports Authority will showcase a dynamic game-day battle on Saturday, November 12, 2022, with a 4:00 pm kickoff at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The Jackson State University Tigers, led by 2021 SWAC Coach of the Year/NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, are featured against Coach Connell Maynor and the determined Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University. This classic rivalry is generating huge interest from gridiron fans, alumni, and enthusiasts from across the entire country for what is known by many as “The Ultimate HBCU Experience.”

“With college football fans returning with a vengeance to stadiums across the country in 2021, it was great seeing that passion return after the lost year of 2020. We at the Mobile Sports Authority are very excited to be hosting another big HBCU football weekend for the seventh straight year as we welcome Coach Prime’s Tigers and Coach Maynor’s Bulldogs. We also look forward to having the alumni and fans in town for a fun-filled week of events,” states Danny Corte, Executive Director of the Mobile Sports Authority.

Both schools express their excitement for this strong football contest of wills and the levels of hospitality shown by Mobile.

With Alabama A&M University returning for the fourth time, Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks said, “We’re excited to return once again to the Gulf Coast Challenge. The City of Mobile has become like a second home for the Bulldogs, and we look forward to an exciting game against Jackson State University.”

Jackson State University Vice President/Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson wholeheartedly agrees, “It is an outstanding showcase for our University and especially meaningful to play in Mobile in the hometown of one of our most famous alumni, Pro Football Hall of Famer Robert Brazile. We look forward to an exciting weekend and an outstanding football game.”

The Gulf Coast Challenge and its targeted activities through the week serve to further elevate and expose the diverse segments that are mutually beneficial for the entire Mobile area and the HBCUs involved. Timothy Hale Jr., Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Challenge, articulates his appreciation for the growth, supportive partnerships and unprecedented energy evidenced for 2022. He states, “Over the past few years, the GCC has grown and established key relationships and priorities that will continually serve and benefit HBCUs and our communities well into the future. The upward trajectory and opportunities presented during this exciting event are limitless.”
