Dauphin Street Vault Returns for Fifth Year

Jul 10th, 2015

The Dauphin Street Vault comes to downtown Mobile Saturday, July 18, for the fifth installment of the event. Competition kicks off at 10 a.m. CDT and concludes at 10 p.m. CDT.

The annual pole vaulting competition is open to all ages and skill levels and includes Olympians and professionals. The Dauphin Street Vault, held on Lower Dauphin Street in Mobile’s Entertainment District, was formed to help promote health and wellness through athletics and also to celebrate the uniqueness of pole vaulting by throwing an all-day celebration in its honor. The event is also certified by USA Track & Field.

The 2014 version proved to be a thrilling one as then-high school senior Devin King, from Jewel Sumner High School in Kentwood, LA, jumped a personal best of 18’0” which was the best jump by a high schooler in the U.S. in 2014.

This year’s competition will also include the inaugural Dauphin Street Dash – a USATF-sanctioned 400-meter sprint. Competitors will start in front of O’Daly’s Irish Pub and finish four blocks later at Cathedral Square. A pre-race block party will open festivities beginning at 4 p.m. CDT at O’Daly’s with the Kids Race beginning at 6 p.m. and the women’s and men’s races to follow.

The Dauphin Street Vault has seen extensive growth in both participants and spectators since its inaugural event in 2011. Beginning with 70 competitors that first year, the event is expecting at least 200 participants this year along with 3,000+ spectators.
