24th Annual Mobile Challenge of Champions Invt'l Track Meet in Town This Weekend

Mar 29, 2016

MOBILE, Ala. - The 24th Annual Mobile Challenge of Champions presented by the Mobile Sports Authority is set to kick off its track and field meet this Friday, April 1st. This prestigious two-day high school meet will be held at UMS-Wright Preparatory School and St. Paul's Episcopal High School in Mobile.

The Mobile Challenge of Champions is annually held in two parts with track and field featured in April and a cross-country meet kicking off in early September. According to the National Scholastic Athletic Foundation, April's meet is among the top-five ranked high school track and field invitationals nationwide, while September's cross-country race is also among the nation's top high school competitions. An estimated 3,000 participants take part in the two-part event that brings in more than 4,000 visitors to Mobile annually.

Meet Director Steve Schoenewald commented, "The 2016 Mobile Challenge of Champions presented by the Mobile Sports Authority continues to bring some of the best prep track and field talent to Mobile. The 24th edition is no different, with talent from as far away as New York coming in. 2016 is an Olympic year and some of the athletes who have been here in the past will challenge for a spot on the US Olympic team." Danny Corte, Executive

Director of the Mobile Sports Authority, added, "The Mobile Challenge of Champions is an event in which we saw a tremendous amount of potential when we helped to start it up back in the mid 90's, and wow, it has really paid off for Mobile. Steve Schoenewald and his group have done a great job building this event up over the years into one of the most prestigious track & field meets in the nation. Then you add the cross-country meet in September and you have an excellent series of sports events for Mobile. The Mobile Sports Authority is proud to be a partner with Steve as we assist him in keeping these events at a very high level."

For this weekend's track & field meet, Friday's Open Division will take place at UMS-Wright beginning at 3 p.m. CDT with both running and field events, while Saturday's Invitational Division at St. Paul's Episcopal is slated to start 12 noon with the field events, with running events following at 3 p.m. To view the complete schedule, please visit www.mobilechallengeofchampions.net.
